Sustainability at The Hollandse Club

At The Hollandse Club, sustainability is a journey.

Since 2023, we have been actively working to reduce our environmental impact and foster a culture of responsibility among our members, staff, and community.

We are passionate about making a positive difference that extends beyond the Club impacting not only our facilities and operations but also the wider community and environment we all share.

Sustainability Committee

Our Sustainability Committee consists of 12 members who meet regularly to brainstorm, plan, and implement initiatives to make the club more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

The members are highly motivated to continuously improve sustainability practices at the Club.

If you have any ideas or questions, email saraa@hollandseclub.org.sg.

Our Sustainability Goals

Six key objectives have been identified as priorities for the coming years:

Key Achievements

Towel Sustainability

Small changes can make a big impact. By introducing towel machines, we have reduced towel waste by 90%, keeping hundreds of towels from going to waste each month. To continue this positive impact, we encourage all members to limit towel use to one per person whenever visiting the Club.

Looking ahead, we plan to introduce regular “Bring Your Own Towel Days”, giving members the opportunity to actively participate in our sustainability efforts. Together, these initiatives help conserve resources, reduce waste, and support The Hollandse Club’s journey toward a greener future.

Water Conservation

To significantly reduce water consumption, we have removed a high-consumption water play feature that previously resulted in substantial water waste.

In addition, improvements to pool water drainage have enhanced efficiency and minimised unnecessary water loss. As part of our future plans, we aim to install a push-button, water-efficient water play feature to provide fun while conserving water.

These changes allow us to conserve an essential natural resource while maintaining high standards of comfort and safety for our members. By actively managing water use across our facilities, The Hollandse Club is taking meaningful steps toward a more sustainable and water-responsible future.

Facility & Energy Initiatives

We are continuously improving the energy efficiency of our facilities. With the support of our new chef Nelson, we have introduced energy-efficient kitchen appliances that reduce energy use while maintaining high culinary standards. We have also installed energy-efficient fans and lighting throughout the Club to further lower energy consumption. To date, 13 air-conditioning units have already been replaced, and plans are underway to upgrade an additional 8 units to more energy-efficient systems, including improvements to the hotel’s VRV system.

In addition, we have purchased showers that use less than 9 litres per minute to reduce water consumption, and the installation of motion-sensor lighting in all bathrooms, showers, and changing rooms is in progress.

Soon, as a member, you will be able to see these changes in action!

Waste Reduction & Recycling

We are actively reducing waste and promoting circular practices throughout the Club. Single-use plastics have been fully removed, and food and garden waste including fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags, and hand paper towels is composted and reused in our permaculture community garden.

Alongside this, we actively track kitchen food waste to identify opportunities for further efficiency and reduction. Hand-towel recycling bins are installed in restrooms, and all takeaway packaging is certified compostable, ensuring responsible disposal.

We also aim to expand the community garden by increasing volunteer involvement and using our compost to help it grow further.

Sustainable Food and Beverage

Our food and beverage practices are designed to be healthier for both people and the planet. We prioritise locally sourced produce to reduce food miles and support local suppliers, and we are actively expanding this initiative. Our coffee is Rainforest Alliance–certified, and we use 100% biodegradable, compostable tea bags, ensuring ethical and environmentally responsible sourcing.

In addition, we offer Meatless Mondays for staff meals and an expanded the  vegetarian and vegan menu for members, making sustainable dining an easy and enjoyable choice.

Community Engagement

We believe sustainability extends beyond our Club and into the wider community. Our team actively volunteers at Caritas, supporting local community initiatives and social causes. Projects such as our permaculture community garden connects us to nature and encourage responsible food production. Looking ahead, we are excited to develop new initiatives that invite members to get involved. To see upcoming sustainability activities and community events, visit our Events page.

One of the charities we work with is the Netherlands Charity Association (NCA) which is an independent, non-profit organisation in Singapore dedicated to giving back to the local community by supporting underprivileged individuals and families. Established in 1968, NCA raises funds and awareness for carefully selected local causes, from providing safe shelter and support for migrant domestic workers, to assisting elderly and low-income families, supporting incarcerated mothers and their children, and empowering underprivileged children through play-based leadership programmes.

The Hollandse Club proudly supports NCA's mission as part of our community and charity efforts. Together we help create positive impact and stronger connections between the international community and those in need. Learn more at nca.org.sg.
